Aeropuerto Ecológico Galápagos, unique for its characteristics and specific conditions, has been projected as the first airport with sustainability certification and environmental quality.
The initiative of the development and transformation of the airport as a whole, and the passengers' terminal building in particular, complies with international sustainability systems terms, specially the LEED Gold certification of the U.S. Green Building Council.
It has an area of 6,000 sq m and capacity to receive ten daily flights, with an average of a hundred passengers per flight, and IATA level of service C.
The project achieves a very particular design as it is developed to thrive on solar energy without direct entrance of light, and to make the most effective use of the wind which -through a system of ducts generates a cool breeze in the terminal. Part of the energy demand is satisfied with the use of solar energy, and in turn 30% of clean water in sanitary installations will be saved with the use of rainwater.
