The Inframérica consortium, formed by the Argentine company Corporación América and by Infravix of the Brazilian Engevix Group, was awarded the concession for the airport São Gonçalo do Amarante de Rio Grande do Norte, in Brazil.
The airport of Natal is the first Brazilian air terminal to ever be awarded to a private developer by a bidding process, a move which aroused great interest among foreign consortium administrators. This initiative is framed within a government plan intended to increase airport sector investments before the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Brazil.
It is a 28-year concession representing a total investment of 410 million dollars. During the three first years, Inframérica will build the new airport terminal.
At present, the airport of Natal has an annual traffic of 3 million passengers and it is estimated that these figures will increase to 4.7 million by 2020, and to 7.9 million by 2030.
The airport São Gonçalo do Amarante enters the group of airports which Corporación América operates all around the world, namely: Trapani (Italy), Galápagos and Guayaquil (Ecuador), Montevideo and Punta del Este (Uruguay), Zvartnots (Armenia), six airports in Peru and 35 airports in Argentina. This turns Corporación América into the largest private airport operator around the globe.
